Pain Clinic

About us

The National Women’s Pain Clinic is a multidisciplinary team including pain specialists, psychologists, physiotherapists and pain nurse specialists.

 Referral to the Pain Service

Women requiring review by the pain service must be under the care of a gynaecologist or an obstetrician who have access rights to Auckland District Health Board.

Please note, only referrals from specialists are accepted. This service is not a diagnostic service, therefore it is important that women are seen by a specialist such as a gynaecologist or obstetrician first. If you are under the care of a midwife, your midwife can refer you to an obstetrician in order to initiate the process.

Your Appointments

Your first appointment will be with both a doctor and a pain nurse specialist.

We take a multidisciplinary approach and use many different techniques to help you manage your pain. These include:

  • Pharmacology

  • Physiotherapy (including water walking)

  • Psychology

For women with obstetric pain management issues, we aim to provide effective relief in a way that is safest for your baby. This means choosing the safest medication and ensuring we use the smallest doses necessary
